Hi
Welcome to my tips newsletter for March - how to get rid of hyperlinks in Excel. By default, Excel turns any email and website address into blue and underlined hyperlinks, so that when you mouse-over them, the cursor turns into a hand and if you click it or highlight several cells with an address in them, new emails annoyingly open up for however many email addresses were highlighted, so that you spend the next half hour or more closing them all down! Here's how to turn hyperlinks back into normal text and also, how to prevent them turning into hyperlinks in the first place.
Office 2007 - Heaven or Hell? Have you experienced the new Office 2007 yet? Got the hang of the new "ribbon"? There's certainly been a lot of debate as to whether Microsoft should have so drastically changed something that didn't need "fixing", but like it or not, we will all have to upgrade to Office 2007 at some stage. I'd like to hear your views on Office 2007. Join the debate and let me know what you think of it by answering my quick survey below.
I hope you find the tips useful.
In the meantime, have a magnificent March!

How to Remove Hyperlinks in Excel
By default, Excel turns any email and website address into blue and underlined hyperlinks, so that when you mouse-over them, the cursor turns into a hand and if you click it or highlight several cells with addresses in them, several new emails annoyingly pop up for however many email addresses were highlighted, resulting in the next half hour or more closing them all down! Here's how to turn hyperlinks back into normal text and also, how to prevent them turning into hyperlinks in the first place.
There are essentially 3 ways to remove them easily, manual removal one by one (suitable if there are only one or two); manual removal of a batch of adjacent cells in one operation and thirdly; prevent them from turning into hyperlinks to start with.
How to Remove a Single Hyperlink:
- Right click on the hyperlink (email address that has been blued and underlined and cursor turns into hand when moused-over)
- Select "remove hyperlink"
How to Remove Multiple Hyperlinks in One Operation:
- In an empty cell enter the number "1"
- Hit enter on keyboard
- Right click this cell and select "copy"
- Highlight all the cells with hyperlinks (note they must all be adjacent)
- Right click and select "paste special"
- Select "multiply"
- Hit "OK"
How to Prevent Hyperlinks Occurring in the First Place:
In Excel 95 - 2003:
- On menu bar, select "Tools",
- Select "Autocorrect Options"
- Select the tab "Autoformat as you type"
- Check or tick the box for "internet and network paths with hyperlinks"
- Ok
In Excel 2007:
- Click the Office button (the round Office icon on top left hand corner)
- Click "Excel Options"
- Click "Proofing" from side menu
- Click "Autocorrect Options"
- Select the tab "Autoformat as you type"
- Check the box for "internet and network paths with hyperlinks"
- Ok,
- OK
